Just couple of weeks ago I was having a conversation with my brother about how the work environment should change its ethics. I think the robotics way of the past is very much outdated and failed to impress the (workforce) of the present generation. We are grown ups and should not treat one another like kids. No telling what to do and how to do it. Results are the only thing that matters. With high technology, we can actually do our jobs whenever and wherever we want as long as the job gets done. I wonder if only jobs can be a part of our whole lifestyle and not something that we deal separate from it. No schedules, no pressures. And then here comes the March issue of Experience Life magazine, ROWE stands for Results-Only Work Environment.
Created by Cali and Jody http://www.caliandjody.com/, authors of Why Work Sucks and How to Fix It. Two social visionaries, workplace activists and agents of global change have literally redefined, revolutionized and reinvented the relationship between employers and the people who get the work done.
In a ROWE, each person is free to do whatever they want, whenever they want, as long as the work gets done. The old rules that govern a traditional work environment—core hours, “face time,” pointless meetings, etc.—have been replaced by one rule: focus only on results.
One of the misconceptions about ROWE is that it’s a work-from-home program. It’s not. If you want to work in a cube, that’s great. If you want to work from a coffee shop, then that’s great, too. The question in a ROWE is not “where is everybody?” but “is the work getting done?”
Currently, there are two authentic ROWEs—Fortune 100 retailer Best Buy Co, Inc. and J. A. Counter & Associates, a small brokerage firm in New Richmond, WI. But others say Google may be the real first company to have done this. They have been doing it their own way from the get go.
If you are a slacker, ROWE is not for you.
